Admission Criteria and Expectations

Each applicant must:

  1. be a citizen or permanent resident of the USA;
  2. be accepted or enrolled in an approved APAcT IGERT core discipline PhD program (listed in the FAQs);

Each application must be submitted by an APAcT faculty member and include:

  1. a personal statement from the prospective candidate that highlights their academic, professional, and personal experience, and discusses what they expect to learn from and what they have to contribute to our IGERT while highlighting their research interests;
  2. a support letter from at least one of our APAcT faculty members (listed under the people tab);
  3. a curriculum vitae for the prospecitive candidate


  1. complete interdisciplinary coursework including core courses, electives, and practical training, as specified by the APAcT IGERT’s curriculum, and the student's advisor (s), and complete core course requirements, as mandated by the home department;
  2. work with an assigned primary advisor from his or her home department, have a co-chair from the other institution or another discipline, and have research mentors, committee members or co-advisers at ASU and CSULB;
  3. participate as a teaching/research assistant in his or her home department for at least two years (alternatively, can seek other fellowships to cover this period);
  4. carry out and lead research projects that lie at the intersections of the technology, adaptation and policy aspects of disability research;
  5. develop his or her research prospectus by engaging in activities with individuals with disabilities for a deeper understanding of their lives and learning;
  6. agree to conduct and define interdisciplinary research project(s) which relate to the cross-section of his or her research specialization which will be informed by and connected to the rest of the IGERT community in a manner that promotes inter-trainee collaborations across disciplines;
  7. develop a structured plan for a semester-long interaction with a chosen community partner (coincident with the student forming his or her research prospectus), which will comprise 3 credit hours of research. As part of this activity, the student may conduct surveys, usability studies, design assessments or may observe a particular activity of individuals with disabilities to help design appropriate person-centered solutions;
  8. engage in applied learning through semester-long internships in industry, federal/state government agencies, with community partners, or with global academic partners that address issues related to disabilities;
  9. participate in joint activities, such as seminars and workshops, using video conferencing facilities and the remote collaboration facilities at both institutions;
  10. be exposed to pathways and contemporary issues related to entrepreneurship, commercialization, innovation and global leadership through participation in regular workshops, seminars, conferences and outreach conducted within the innovation centers at ASU and CSULB including a 2-day entrepreneurship and leadership workshop once every semester;
  11. participate in organizing annual new student orientation programs and teambuilding activities - steps that will foster a strong sense of community and solidarity;
  12. present his or her research at the Annual IGERT Research Summit at the end of each academic year (April-May);
  13. participate in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training including online training, seminars and colloquia, continuing education in daily research activities, and a one-day intensive annual workshop on the legal and ethical responsibilities of the students’ research activities;
  14. actively engage in formal interactions with collaborators in various institutions across the country and the world to obtain broader national and global perspectives; and
  15. participate in scholarly outreach activities by disseminating his or her research through publications in premier conferences, journals and focused workshops; social media; transdisciplinary academic sharing through biweekly seminars, monthly guest lectures and webcasts; and maintain and update a wiki forum for disability research with his or her research activities
